11 things I learned on my first gay cruise

You've probably heard of queer cruises and wondered how they differ from "traditional" cruises. Are they start to straight people? Is it all about partying? What about the hook-up element?

I sailed with tour operator Vacaya in February 2023 on a one-week gay cruise departing from Fort Lauderdale and heading to the Caribbean via Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Reflection cruise ship. For context, I'm a white, cisgender, gay man in my mid-30s. I had a lot of questions about what to expect, given this was my second cruise ever and my first one with a queer tour operator.

Here are the top things I'd want someone considering or planning their first same-sex attracted cruise to know.

People are friendly

The first thing that struck me about the sailing was that almost everyone was smiling and eager to interact. As an Australian living in the U.S. for almost a decade, I generally find Americans to be open, talkative and curious. This cruise was appreciate that … on steroids.

I would have found it overwhelming if I weren't an extrovert, but since I'm a social butterfly, I was in heaven.

Tom - you asked about cruise lines; that depends, as for vertical travelers, on whether you prefer elegance or glitz, party atmosphere or subdued, your budget, etc. For elegance and good service, I heartily agree with those who encourage Celebrity. It's no more expensive than other lines but much more refined, and therefore attracts a somewhat more sophisticated crowd. <BR><BR>Regarding gay groups vs. all-gay charters, I personally prefer a gay group. It provides a pleasant group of tour and dinner companions without being overwhelming. Again, it just depends on personal preference for your "style" of journey. I've traveled with groups organized by Cruising with Celebration out of San Diego and been very happy. I'm planning to combine them for two other trips this year: Alaska and the Caribbean, both on Celebrity ships. <BR><BR>Lastly, if you're concerned about existence treated well, I think you can't go wrong on just about any mainstream cruiseline. The staff on any ship is almost uniformly friendly, and the kind of person who cruises is generally perfectly comfortable with queer men or lesb
