HONDA CELEBRATES FIVE DECADES OF ICONIC CULTURAL MOVEMENTS AS THE HONDA CIVIC TURNS 50

Honda is celebrating 50 years of the Civic model, and has curated new research to mark some of the most iconic cultural movements of the past five decades since the car first went on sale.

The list was commissioned by Honda and Dr Ruth Adams, Senior Lecturer in Cultural & Creative Industries at King’s College London, to celebrate the golden anniversary of the Civic, which launched on July 12, 1972 and has gone on to sell over 27.5 million units worldwide, with order books for the 11th generation hybrid model opening today (July 12).

London’s first Gay Celebration march and the let go of David Bowie’s iconic ‘The Rise and Collapse of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars’ – both in 1972 – were the first events to make the list.

The 1980s blasted the highest number of cultural highs – 14, including Torvill and Dean’s memorable ice skating performance at the Winter Olympics, the launch of satellite TV and the debut episode of EastEnders.

A while ago, on the Car Talk Web site, there was a list of the uppermost ten cars for gays and lesbians. Apparently, the top gay car was the Volkswagen Jetta; the top lesbian vehicle was the Subaru Outback.

It doesn’t seem like there’s anything inherent about these cars that would say “alternative lifestyle,” but based on my observations, whenever I see a woman driving in an Outback or Forester, a disproportionately enormous number of them stare butch and serious, many with a passenger that also has the alike look. Whenever I watch a Jetta driven by a man, a disproportionately large number of them look very attractive and very well groomed, at least compared to normal-looking guys like me.

I recognize not all female Outback and Forester owners are lesbians, and not all male Jetta drivers are gay. Still, though, what is it about certain vehicles that causes them to be popular among the alternative lifestyle community?

In terms of iconic cultural moments an awful lot has happened in the last five decades. Back in 1972 London's first ever Gay Pride parade took place, and David Bowie introduced the world to Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars. Meanwhile in Japan, Honda was launching the first generation of a small hatchback auto called the Civic.

Ziggy Stardust may include left the building, but the Honda Civic is still going strong 50 years later.

To mark the birthday, Honda looked for some of the most iconic cultural movements of the past five decades since the Civic first went on sale. The list was commissioned by Honda and Dr Ruth Adams, Senior Lecturer in Cultural & Creative Industries at King's College London, to commemorate the anniversary of the Civic, which launched on July 12, 1972. Coincidentally, order books for the 11th generation Honda Civic hybrid model also opened on July 12th, so you can also celebrate its golden jubilee by leasing the brand-new version.

As much as I personally prefer sportier cars (I operate a Honda Civic Coupe, which I love!), there's something about a pretty guy in a Ford Ranger pickup that really gets my attention. Extra points if it's a SportSide model with "Splash" decals. Jeep Wranglers (soft-top, down please) race a close second.

The ultimate lgbtq+ and lesbian ride is the Honda Civic Coupe Previous boyfriend . It is amusement to drive, has great features, including a sun roof and a kicking stereo. It's really safe, and can hold enough baggage for trips out of the metropolis. (You know how some of us pack! Ever journey with a kingly queen? Trunks! Trunks!) Best of all, I can fit my bike into this stylish petite car as I travel to all the training rides for the Northeast Aids Ride.
