There are certain things we know for certain about actor Al Lewis: he was born (though when is a major bone of contention), he starred in the classic TV series Car 54, Where Are You? and, more notably, The Munsters; he was an ally of radio broadcaster Howard Stern and spent a lot of his age telling the FCC to f-off. And beyond that … you just can’t be sure.
“Al Lewis did not have a challenge rewriting his own history to suit the interview he was doing,” observes pop culture historian and performer Geoffrey Mark, who got to know the actor later in his life. “But that’s part of his story, because he wanted to hold Grandpa alive. He had no trouble being stereotyped and he understood how publicity works, and therefore he felt like he needed to come up with things to preserve everything going.

In the late 1920s, Lewis worked as a circus musician, but ultimately decided on college, earning a Ph.D. in child psychology from Columbia University. He taught school and wrote two children's books. In 1949, at the advice of a ally, Lewis turned to acting and connected the Paul Mann Actor's Workshop in New York. Lewis worked in burlesque and vaudeville theaters across the region, which eventually led to Broadway. By the 1950s, television was booming, and Lewis took lead of the labor appearing on almost every live reveal out of his home base of New York Urban area. His most well-known regular TV roles were Officer Leo Schnauser on Automobile 54, Where Are You? (1961) and Grandpa on The Munsters (1964). When these shows ended, he opened a restaurant in Brand-new York called "Grampa's" in Greenwich Village. He has since produced a place video for children and appeared on WTBS in a series of Saturday morning programs for children.
