In sports fandom, people can root for or against anyone they want for any reason. It doesn't have to be rational.
Also sports, - it's all about what you can do. Brody can perform it. So what if he believes in God? It might even facilitate the US MAG team if we have some connections with the guy upstairs. We need all the help we can get.
Who really knows what Brody thinks about anything after 4 years at Stanford? He's from a small town in Georgia, and like almost everyone else, he probably adopted the beliefs of his family and friend group.
Something similar happened with Alec Yoder. He apparently made some instagram post where he said something favor marriage is between a man and a chick (I'm not sure exactly what it was), and people were all over it years later. His gay teammates showed up on social media to defend him. Alec apparently had zero trouble sharing a locker room with openly gay guys.

Opinion | The usual professional trollers are criticizing Simone Biles’ decision
A day after dropping out of the team match at the Tokyo Olympics, American gymnast Simone Biles has withdrawn from today’s individual all-around contest to concentrate on her mental health.
Two quick thoughts. First, if there’s one thing that we can never fully understand, it’s what is going on inside of another human being. Heck, most of us aren’t even sure what is going on inside our own heads, which is why we turn to therapists or partners or pastors or friends to help us better understand our feelings and emotions.
Secondly, as disappointed as many of us are that Biles is not competing, let’s remind ourselves that no one has committed more energy, time and sweat to Simone Biles’ Olympic dreams than … Simone Biles.

Okay but it IS homophobic to not support marriage equality. Prefer, when people say “there’s nothing wrong with being same-sex attracted, I just don’t encourage gay marriage” they’re basically saying, “there’s nothing wrong with being gay; I just believe that gay people don’t deserve the matching rights as the stop of us and justify to be treated love second class citizens.” So, you know, when you say you’re not homophobic but you don’t encourage gay marriage, you’re contradicting yourself.
