BSU student attacked for supporting gay rights

BRIDGEWATER -- Authorities are trying to recognize two people who attacked a writer for the student-run newspaper at the largest state university in Massachusetts because of an opinion piece she wrote in support of lgbtq+ marriage.

Bridgewater State University spokesman Bryan Baldwin said on Saturday that the assailants approached Destinie Mogg-Barkalow on campus. The man questioned her about the article titled "Prop 8 generates more hate" before the woman accompanying him punched the victim, leaving her with a bruised eye Thursday evening.

No one has been arrested and authorities are investigating the ambush as a possible detest crime.

University President Dana Mohler-Faria sent an email to the whole school condemning the attack and reminding everyone authorities will not tolerate any actions that impede or curtail the rights of members of the campus community to express themselves freely.

LGBTQIA Resource Center

In April 2012, Bowie Express University became America's first Historically Dark College and University with a LGBTQIA Resource Center.

The LGBTQIA Resource Center fosters an open, shielded and inclusive environment for people of all sexualities and gender identities. The LGBTQIA Resource Center has resources for anyone who is interested in knowledge about LGBT people, issues, and the intersections of race, gender identity/expression, and social class.

The LGBTQIA Resource Center works with faculty, staff and students to increase awareness and affirmation of LGBTQIA individuals to cut down discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In addition, the center collaborates with faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members to develop programs to promote knowledge and awareness. Equally significant, the LGBTQIA Resource Center facilitates intentional programs and services that assist the university's commitment to inclusion and retention among the LGBT+ community. Signature programs and services add and are not limited to: Protected Space Training, My Pronouns Matter, and Living LBGT+ in Color.

While June is nationally acknowledged as Pride Month, Bemidji State University has drawn-out supported and welcomed all students regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. To celebrate and raise Pride across campus, BSU’s community-centered opportunities for students, faculty and staff are ever-expanding.

The first Pride Month – then called “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month” – was declared in 1999 by President Bill Clinton to recognize the Stonewall Riots on June 28, 1969. During the riots patrons of Recent York City’s Stonewall Inn resisted police violence targeted towards the queer society and sparked the 2SLGBTQIA+ movement.

2SLGBTQIA+ stands for two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, gender nonconforming, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, plus. The term “queer” throughout this narrative signifies queer-sexual and queer-gender identities, as well as those who are part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

The mission of the Pride Center at Bridgewater State University is to endorse LGBTQIA+ students and their peers, and to foster a campus climate of inclusion and equity.
