Facebook can tell whether you're gay based on a few 'likes,' study says
Do you “like” Lady Gaga, Human Rights Campaign and “True Blood” on Facebook? Chances are advertisers ponder you’re gay, researchers say.
A new study published in the journal "Big Data" found that ad campaigns can make inferences about whether a user is gay based on as little as three likes, even when users intentionally withhold their sexual orientation.
As Facebook users express concerns regarding their privacy and how their personal facts is being used, the study raises concerns about “outing” people who are closeted — or those who just don’t desire companies to know their sexual orientation in instruction to show them targeted ads.
"While some online users may benefit from entity targeted based on inferences of their personal characteristics, others may find such inferences unsettling,” the study's authors, who hail from Columbia Business School, Fresh York University and Northeastern University, wrote.

US Black gay and bisexual person men stigmatised by PrEP ads targeted for them
Black gay and attracted to both genders men in the US prefer PrEP advertisements that feature couples with racial, sexual, and gender diversity, according to a mixed methods study published in PLOS ONE. The men found diverse couple composition in ads to be less stigmatising than ads solely featuring Black queer and bisexual male couples, and more appealing than ads featuring no couples.
There’s an urgent need to improve PrEP use among Black gay and bisexual person men in the US. Marketing campaigns that aim to do so must navigate the intersection of racism, homophobia, and stigma around sex, PrEP and HIV; it is uncomplicated to miss the stamp and further stigmatise this under-served population.
The current examine is part of a larger longitudinal study on PrEP advertisements and US Black gay and fluid men. As previously reported, researchers first looked at how US Black same-sex attracted and bisexual men felt about the messaging used in a series of PrEP ads, which highlighted a balancing act between simple and comprehensive messaging.
