Fresh off the plane, jet-lagged and in seek of food on my first night, I wandered into North Abraxas, a restaurant across the highway from my hotel. As soon as it became apparent I was alone, I was offered a seat at the exclude. Ugh! Typical. 

Vacationing alone has never been my thing, but on a recent business trip to Jerusalem, I decided it would be crazy not to tack on some moment in Tel Aviv. I had heard so many great things about the city, including how welcoming it is to members of the LGBTQ+ group, that I set aside my usual misgivings about solo travel as an openly gay man and gave myself a weekend to explore this gem of a city.

As I settled into my seat around the half-oval-shaped block with the lively unwrap kitchen behind it, I girded myself for an evening of staring linear ahead and ingesting something off the menu as quickly as I could. It’s a place where cultures collide: Jews, Arabs, Christians, atheists, artists, scientists, locals, foreigners, young, old, gay and straight – they all share this rather secular city in such a religious country. But somehow this diversity and tolerance of one another has created an ambiance in Tel Aviv rarely set up in other cities throughout the world. Tel Aviv has recently landed itself on the map as one of the foremost destinations for LGBT travelers. But more than just weather, Tel Aviv is vibrant, hip and esthetic. It’s a city that doesn’t sleep and even in the heart of a highly religious state, it’s a place where you can find a huge gay population with a sense of openness and a thriving nightlife scene.

With a population of just under 400,000, the greater metropolitan area boasts over 1.5 million inhabitants, and on weekends, Tel Aviv is the darkness life centre for all of Israel. As an immigrant society, its imaginative expression has absorbed numerous cultural and social influences, as the traditions of each group mix with those of other groups, confront Israel's recent history and life in the context of the middle east, and blend together to create a new culture distinct to Israel in general and Tel Aviv in particular. Unlike the spiritual, ancient, holy capital of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv (founded in 1909) is a modern city. Though much of the city's buildings are built in the plain cement design of the 1950's and 1960's, many buildings from the 1930s have recently been renovated to their original splendour.

Nowhere else in the Middle East will you find a more vibrant gay scene than in Tel Aviv. In fact, Israel is one of the world’s most progressive countries when it comes to gay or queer issues. A gender nonconforming singer represented the state in the Eurovision Lyric Contest in 1998 and took home the prize, bringing trans people into the Israeli mainstream. In 2007 it became feasible for same-sex couples to get married, and anti-discrimination laws also ensure that gay citizens are finer protected at the workplace or the army than in many European countries or the United States.
LGBT characters and issues are well represented on television and literature, contributing to a generally open-minded society. You'll even discover a significant number of heterosexuals celebrating Gay Event events, which include parades in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Jerusalem was also the host city of the World Pride events in 2006, with distinct conferences, tours, and parties.
In Tel Aviv, same-sex attracted and gay-friendly establishments welcome locals and an increasing number of European visitors on a long weekend break. Its beaches are filled with young cosmopolitan crowds, and its pleasant restaurants and shops ar
