Crete, at more than 8,000 square kilometres, is 80 times bigger than Mykonos. The island is famous for its  under-the-radar, gay beach scene. Crete is a big island and you are not going to see it all in one day!

Most people launch their trip in the capital (at Heaklion Airport). We recommend you stand a few days here to take in the gay beaches and bars of Heraklion.  Rent a car and explore the villages south of the Island for a more authentic island experience.  Ingest great good from local tavernas and discover secluded beaches with a shade of blue that will stay with you drawn-out after your holiday has ended.

Crete was one of our first vacations as a gay couple and although there isn’t a enormous gay scene in Crete we felt very welcome on this beautiful island and have returned many times since!

Crete is the largest island in Greece offering everything from attractive soft sand beaches, to rich historical sights, a thriving nightlife scene and mountains inland to examine by car.

During our trips we had no issues being gay in Crete and felt particularly content around the touristy areas. The most popular destinations in Crete for same-sex attracted travellers are typically Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, and Agios Nikolaos, as well as Malia (where there is a young party crowd).

Crete has thousands of visitors from all over the world every year and gay travel around Greece in general is very popular with the likes of Mykonos and Athens for example (although perform check out the smaller islands like the pretty Ios!).

Ever since Seby found out that I’m originally Greek, he’s been begging for us to take a trip to gay Crete. A big fan of mythology, all things from Aphrodite to Achilles, it was like he was predestined to end up with a Greek fantasy of his very own.

I finally agreed to move on a trip, but only because I’d been watching the two Mamma Mia films and was getting serious Greek island envy. Just looking at images of the beaches was enough to acquire me all hot and bothered.

Full of history and culture, the fascinating backstories and tantalizing atmosphere can make anyone fall top over hells for Crete. Sure, the gay nightlife may not be as crazy as some of the other Greek islands, like Mykonos’ gay scene, but it’s still very much alive, pulsing with music and pure Cretan energy!
