Pete Buttigieg, more commonly known as "Mayor Pete," announced his presidential exploratory committee on Jan. 23, 2019, and followed up with an official campaign launch on April 14, 2019. Buttigieg, who came out as he was pursuing his second term as mayor of his hometown, is hoping to become the nation's first openly male lover presidential nominee of a major party.
Out of the running: Saying that "the path has narrowed to a close," Buttigieg announced Sunday night that he is suspending his 2020 presidential campaign. 9-year-old boy asks Pete Buttigieg for advice on coming out as gay
DENVER -- A 9-year-old boy asked Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg for advice on coming out as same-sex attracted during a campaign rally in Colorado Saturday.
Buttigieg decipher Zachary Ro's question out loud and then invited the 9-year-old to connect him on stage as the crowd cheered and chanted "love is love."
"Would you help me telling the world that I'm gay too? I yearn to be brave enjoy you," the question read.
Buttigieg, the first openly homosexual candidate to earn presidential primary delegates, commended Ro on his own bravery and told him he struggled with coming out.
"It took me a drawn-out time to tell even my best friend that I was gay, leave alone to go out there and tell the world, and to notice you willing to approach to terms with who you are in a room full of a thousand people, thousands of people you've never met, that's really something," the South Bend mayor said.
Buttigieg then told Zachary he should always be correct to himself and said his own bravery could inspire others.

Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg's sexuality has turn into a campaign issue after a radio host questioned if voters would select a man "kissing his husband on stage".
Firebrand conservative Rush Limbaugh said Democrats must realise America is still not ready to elect a gay man.
Mr Buttigieg's Democratic rivals leapt to his defence, and President Donald Trump said he would vote for a same-sex attracted man.
Mr Limbaugh was last week awarded a top civilian honour by the president.
On his radio show which is nationally syndicated to millions of listeners, Mr Limbaugh on Wednesday imagined Demcorats' deliberations over who to vote for.
He said: "They're saying, 'OK, how's this going to look? Thirty-seven-year-old gay guy kissing his husband on stage, next to Mr Male, Donald Trump.'"
If elected, 38-year-old Mr Buttigieg would be the first openly homosexual US president. He is the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, a city of just over 100,000 people.
