Pikes Peak State College's Counseling Center has joined forces with Colorado Springs Health Foundation and Empowering Minds Nurturing Souls, Inc. to help remove the stigma and shame that marginalized communities and people of color have around mental health.
"The stigma is so strong in those communities that individuals are not open to accepting their mental health problems. Ridicule, belittling and lack of acceptance from the family create fear and ultimately prevent individuals from receiving the care and resources that exist," says Yolanda Harris, director of PPSC's Counseling Center. "And, we aim to change that. "
PPSC, CSHF and EMNS will conduct a free symposium to combat this mental-health stigma and unite individuals and families with the resources they need.
"No More Secrets: Breaking Through Barriers" will take place on Oct. 4-5 at PPSC's Centennial Campus, 5675 S. Academy Blvd, Colorado Springs. The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.
PPSC's Counseling Center provides students with professional mental health counseling, short-term intervention, crisis intervention and referrals to community resources to help students co
Could the Elijah McClain Case Impact Colorado’s Senate Primary?
In Recent York and Kentucky last week, shadowy progressives Mondaire Jones, Jamaal Bowman, and possibly even Charles Booker (who is in the guide at time of publication) swung come-from-behind victories, toppling well-funded opponents in the race’s closing weeks. Those campaigns, no doubt, were buoyed by the nationwide protests against police brutality. Jones, Bowman, and Booker all vocally supported the protest movement and participated in local rallies.
In each case, local instances of police brutality—Eric Garner in New York, Breonna Taylor and David McAtee in Louisville—have already played a role in meaningfully swinging the election outcomes. What, then, might be the impact of the case of Elijah McClain, the 23-year-old African American who was killed by police in Aurora, Colorado, last August?
Aurora police apprehended McClain as he was walking home from a convenience store and put him in a chokehold, before first responders injected him with ketamine to subdue him further. He then had a heart attack on the way to the hospital, was declared brain-dead, and died days later. The police were
Brianna was 11 years mature when she was first bullied at school. She suffered from anxiety and depression. Her father told her she was a mistake.
Then she got support. Brianna joined a program called “Check Your Head.” She learned how to express her feelings through song, dance, poetry, journaling, and art.
Now she counsels friends who face similar challenges. She’s spoken at a press conference at the State Capitol, addressed 500 attendees at a downtown gala, and create — in her favorite Walt Disney line — “It’s kind of enjoyable to do the impossible.”
Mental Health Colorado started “Check Your Head” because of young people like Brianna. Nearly 2,000 students contain taken part in the program over the past seven years.
That’s a pleasant start, but it’s not enough. More than one million Coloradans experience a mental health or substance use disorder each year. The first symptoms typically appear during adolescence.
According to the most recent Sound Kids Colorado Survey:
-an estimated 30 percent of our state’s high-school students have felt sad or hopeless every day for two weeks;
-more than 17 percent have considered suicide in the past year; and
-nearly 8 percent have attempted
