(RADIO.COM) – On Saturday Night, Katy Perry accepted the ccccNational Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign, a foremost LGBTQ advocacy group. She appeared at the 2017 Los Angeles Gala Dinner and in her speech discussed gay friends, pop music and how she overcame a sheltered, intolerant childhood.
"This community here tonight has achieved more progress toward a more flawless union in a compact amount of time as any group in our history," Perry said. "So I stand with you and I know that we stand together against discrimination, whether it be in the LGBTQ collective or our Latino brothers and sisters or the millions of Muslims in this country."
Perry recalled her breakthrough single "I Kissed a Girl" and how its message was at odds with the way she was raised in the church. Both of Perry's parents are conservative preachers.
"Truth be told: A) I did more than that," Perry said. "But B) How was I going to reconcile that with the gospel singing girl raised in youth groups that [was] pro-conversion camps? What I did know is that I was curious, and even then, I knew that sexuality wasn't as ebony and white as this dress."

Katy Perry just made a few decision tweaks to Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s contentious Benedictine College commencement speech that made waves last month.
On Saturday, the “Roar” singer shared a heavily edited version of the football player’s comments, which the star remixed in honor of June’s LGBTQ+ Identity month.
“Fixed this for my girls, my graduates, and my gays,” she wrote in the caption. “You can execute anything, congratulations and happy pride.”
While Butker railed against “degenerate cultural values” love reproductive choice and working women in his speech at the Catholic college, Perry’s edit made it look love he was celebrating female graduates and the queer community.
Starting with stretches of the kicker’s authentic words, the video began with him saying, “For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be haughty of all that you have achieved to this indicate in your new lives.”
