Finding Your People in the LGBTQIA+ Community
By Amber Leventry
Social connections are vital to mental and physical health. Having friends and people you can count on gives you a perception of belonging and comfort. To thrive in all areas of life, you need to feel prefer you’re part of a community.
No matter where you live, it’s possible to find connections with people who understand you in unspoken ways. LGBTQIA+ folks often refer to these people as our chosen family.
Finding community is one of the best ways to nurture your mental health, because you are surrounding yourself with people who love you for you. These people advocate for you, encourage you to take care of yourself, and bring you happiness. They can also reduce harm from people who aren’t supportive.
You may not be out to anyone or may be afraid to ask how to find these magical humans. Or maybe you’ve started looking but haven’t yet found your people. Here are some places to consider when you want to find your people within the LGBTQIA+ community.

We work to improve the mental health and wellbeing of all LGBTQ communities and to make mental health a community concern. We recognise that our communities are wonderfully diverse and welcome all LGBTQ+ people including those who identify as asexual, aromantic, pansexual, genderqueer, genderqueer, genderfluid and intersex. Our services are also available to those who may not identify under the LGBTQ umbrella, including straight people who have sexual and/or romantic relationships with LGBTQ people, men who possess sex with men, women who contain sex with women, people who previously identified as LGBTQ and those who are questioning their sexual and/or gender identities. If you are unsure, please do get in touch with us. Our services are for LGBTQ people aged 18+ who are based in Sussex, with the exception of our Online Support service which is available nationally. See below for opening times. Right now, we must unite in defiance by using our collective voice — because our people are our dominance, and our stories deserve to be heard.
