Pride Month Reminder: Vulnerable California Republicans Young Kim and Michelle Steel Vote Against ‘Respect for Marriage Act’

This Pride Month, Orange County Republicans Michelle Steel and Young Kim are under fire for their far-right views on same-sex marriage.

In July 2022, when the U.S. House voted to pass the bipartisan Respect for Marriage Act, Steel and Kim voted NO.

The bill – now signed into law by President Biden – protects marriage equality and ensures legal queer and interracial marriages are recognized.

Steel and Kim are clearly out-of-step with the majority of Californians on protecting people’s civil rights, and the vulnerable Congresswomen will be pressed to answer for their unpopular and risky record as same-sex marriage protections may soon be on the ballot again in California.

DCCC spokesperson Viet Shelton:
“At a time when the far-right continues to ambush the LGBTQ community, it’s increasingly important that we have leaders in Congress who are willing to stand up to bullies and protect privacy, security, and equality for everyone. Michelle Steel and Juvenile Kim have repeatedly aligned themselves with those bullies, and the DCCC will continue to h

The Case Against Michelle Steel

“If it’s a good policy for the working families of Orange County, Michelle Steel has voted against it. Michelle Steel has been a rubber stamp on Republicans’ MAGA agenda – attacking commonsense solutions to cut costs and enhance general safety in request to appease her party bosses and wealthy donors. It’s time Orange County residents had a representative who understands the meaning of service and will do what it takes to guard the American Hope – that’s exactly what veteran and first-generation American Jay Chen will accomplish for Orange County in Congress.”  – DCCC Chairman Sean Patrick Maloney

Subject: The Case Against Michelle Steel

Michelle Steel is a debauch politician who says one thing and does another. She claims she is working for the families of Orange County, but is really just taking orders from her wealthy donors and tax-raising party bosses. She attacked our democracy by refusing to investigate the insurrection against our government, stood against price caps for skyrocketing insulin costs, and voted against critical infrastruc

With less than three months until Election Day, one congressional candidate’s past labor as an attorney characterizing someone accused of sexual assault is being called into question by his opponent.

That attention on previous work underscores the volatility and competitive nature of the race in California’s 45th congressional district. It also highlights just how much gender-based issues — like sexual violence and abortion — are playing a role in the 2024 elections, including this closely-watched race.

Rep. Michelle Steel‘s campaign accused Derek Tran, a Democratic challenger in the race, of designing a legal case to blame sexual assault victims for why a person accused of such was fired from a job.

Tran, an attorney, represented a former Costco employee accused of sexually assaulting three female coworkers and was subsequently fired. That former employee switched his legal inclusion earlier this year, but when Tran was still representing him, he wrote in a March 2022 complaint that his client was “discriminated against for his gender due to the political climate and ‘me too’ movement.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, released the following statement from Executive Director Tony Hoang in response to the Home passing H.R. 734, a federal transgender youth sports ban that seeks to exclude transgender, nonbinary, and intersex students from participating on school sports teams, on a party line vote of 219-203:

“While students in the United States face many issues concerning their actual safety and well-being — the continued epidemic of gun force, inadequate school funding in rural and urban areas, increased rates of depression and anxiety — anti-LGBTQ+ House Republicans have chosen to forego seeking solutions to these problems and instead focused on the exclusion and harassment of transgender, nonbinary, and intersex youth.

“The nationwide transgender youth sports ban passed today is a solution in search of a obstacle. Transgender, nonbinary, and intersex youth want to participate in team sports for th

GARDEN GROVE, CA – Following the Supreme Court’s ruling to dismantle Roe v. Wade, and Justice Thomas’s written intention to doubt marriage equality, last night a bipartisan group of Congressmembers passed the Respect for Marriage Proceed. Congresswoman Steel failed to join her California Republican colleagues and instead voted against codifying marriage equality.

Earlier this legal title Steel voted against the Equality Act which provides federal nondiscrimination protections for the Diverse community. Steel was previously criticized for stating she withdrew her daughter from college for supporting gay marriage.

“Tonight Michelle Steel voted against extending basic human rights to members of the LGBTQ community and failed to remain up against discrimination,” said Chen. “While extremely disappointing, this is not surprising. Steel has consistently proven that she can’t be trusted to protect her constituents. In Congress, I will ask for respect and equality for everyone regardless of s
