What to see at the Midsumma Festival this year

Midsumma Carnival

Sunday 19 January 2025, Alexandra Gardens (Melbourne CBD)

The Midsumma Carnival signals the origin of the three-week Midsumma Festival.

This iconic, family-friendly outdoor celebration attracts more than 120,000 people and entry is free. There are four major carnival stages that will host a variety of LGBTQIA+ acts, including singers, drag artists, DJs and performers.

There will be more than 210 stalls, with pop-up bars, two large food zones, and stalls featuring community groups and businesses. Come along and enjoy the activities and amusement at the RACV stall, including deal with painting, music, and a Pride assertion wall. Take part in the Lip Sync Limelight match or parade your pooch in the Midsumma Carnival Canine Show from 3pm on the Picnic Precinct Stage.

As the night approaches, the Carnival transforms into a 16+ sway party across the Main and Picnic stages. Bring your dancing shoes and boogie the blackout away to major headliners.

Parking can be a challenge at this event, so aim to hold a train to Flinders St

Midsumma Pride March draws thousands as LGBTIQA+ community fears international vilification

The Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has taken a swipe at US President Donald Trump as she took part in the 30th anniversary of the Midsumma Pride Protest in Melbourne.

Organisers tell thousands of participants and spectators were expected in St Kilda on Sunday in a celebration of the “ferocity, uniqueness, and diversity” of Victoria's LGBTIQA+ communities.

The start of the event was brought forward half an hour due to forecast excessive heat, with Melbourne expected to extend 38 degrees before possible storms in the evening.

LGBTQIA+ celebrations to showcase Victoria's Pride

A landmark program of pride events and projects returns to Victoria each year as part of a statewide celebration of LGBTQIA+ communities.

The annual event named Victoria’s Pride (previously Melbourne Pride) will be held across the state for at least four years to support and celebrate our rainbow communities.

Victoria’s Pride kicks off in November with a series of regional activities, culminating in a one-day street party in Melbourne’s iconic Gertrude and Smith Street precinct on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people, from 11.00am to 9.00pm as the closing event of Midsumma Festival. It includes multiple stages with free, live entertainment including tune, comedy, guest speakers, circus, drag and art installations. Performing artists are announced ahead of the event.

The event provides an opportunity for people across the state to demonstrate their pride in and assist for LGBTQIA+ communities, as well as for LGBTQIA+ people to connect with one another and perceive represented.
