‘In The Know’ Co-Creator Brandon Gardner Mines NPR For All The Laughs

In The Know is one of the excellent comedies of 2024. The Peacock series from co-creators Zach Woods, Brandon Gardner, and Mike Assess takes place at an NPR studio. It makes entertainment of liberal personas, the classic caricature of NPR hosts and listeners, but also takes their lead in crafting jokes that punch up.

In The Know is a nice comedy, as well as a cinematic one, thanks to lovely stop-motion work from ShadowMachine (Pinocchio). The Emmy contender for this year’s Best Animated Series is a feel-good, consistent supply of laughs that, originally, Gardner and Woods (who voices Laurence Caspian) didn’t imagine as stop-motion. Judge suggested the idea, which shed a whole modern light on the characters and jokes.

Recently, Brandon Gardner — a student and teacher at UCB — spoke with Immersive Media about making the delightful stop-motion comedy for adults.

Let’s begin with the ending. I really like the idea of [NPR Host] Lauren Caspian finally just shedding his persona and being a person. Was that a moment you were all always building towards?

Jewish comedian Zach Woods looms large. Literally. According to IMDb, his trademark is “his towering height.” But of course, he also takes up space in Hollywood. Since the 2010s, Zach has been ultrarecognizable for his hilariously awkward style of comedy and roles in “The Office” and “Silicon Valley.”

So, here are 18 things to know about Zach Woods.

1. Zach was born on Sept. 25, 1984 in Trenton, New Jersey to a Jewish family.

2. He’s a Libra!

    Nice writing ergo amazing product.

The first thing someone should pick up from the show is the witty and amazing paced dialogues and funnily written characters.

Who would've thought a universal radio setting could transport out so much of modern society, from the smart comedic parody of the left-wing media host and his assistant to the great characterization of the (tiktok viral) pansexual frat boy to the gray and cozy demeanor of the executive producer.

The artistic choices are a chapter of their have, the stop motion animation is amazing although assisted with some digital after effects, the fact it blends in re

When Brandon Gardner ’05 developed a stop-motion animated comedy series with Zach Woods and Mike Evaluate, a public radio station was the ideal setting for the show.

“We chose a public radio station as a way to scout characters similar to Zach and myself,” Gardner says. “I would describe us as very liberal, progressive people. And as much as we agree with those values, we also think that there’s absurdity — at least with Zach and myself — and hypocrisy to our habit where we don’t live up to our ideals. We wanted characters who could reflect what was funny about ourselves and the friends in our liberal bubble.”

The first season of In the Know, featuring the voice talents of Woods (Gabe from The Office) and Judge (creator of Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill), premiered in overdue January 2024 on Peacock. It is the first mature person animated series on the streaming service.

Brandon Gardner: “I love all the characters, but I’ll go with Chase, who on the surface is an alcoholic frat bro but also is one of the kindest and least judgmental characters.”

In the second episode of In the Know, Peacock’s new stop-motion animated workplace comedy set at a parodic version of NPR, the show’s ensemble is struggling to solicit donations when Fabian (Caitlin Reilly), the office’s researcher, hops on the air in a fit of rage and begins berating the station’s “needle-dicked, neoliberal, piss-pants” listeners into paying up. Pledges begin pouring in instantly. “I guess, grave down, public-radio listeners are just a bunch of progressive pay pigs begging to get dommed,” says Carl (Carl Tart), the station’s audio engineer.

At its best, In the Know — co-created by The Zach Woods,Brandon Gardner, and Mike Judge — successfully “doms” public-radio listeners prefer this by highlighting their most obnoxious if relatable tendencies. Woods voices protagonist Lauren Caspian, host of the station’s third-most-popular exhibit, a man described in the series as looking like “the stork who brings miscarriages.” His overpowering narcissism is constantly interfering with his desperate longing to be seen as a perfect hyperprogressive ally. At one point, he jettisons a planned air in favor of a sweaty, impromp
